Premise
From earliest civilizations, recurring motifs have inspired great art, literature, drama, science, math and music. By making connections with the past, we begin to understand the universality of creative expression.
Stream Description
Every civilization known to man is represented by great works of art which define the culture of the civilization. In great sculpture, paintings, musical compositions, literature and theatrical works of every civilization, certain recurring motifs have been a source of artistic inspiration in man’s attempt to understand himself.
The objectives of this stream are to introduce students to great works and their underlying themes, and through a study of history and culture to enable students to recognize the universality of human emotion. The themes that will be included in this stream are Patriotism, Revenge, Jealousy, Honor, Greed, Prejudice, Love, Truth, and Hubris. Evaluation procedures will be based on each student’s ability to synthesize historical, cultural and artistic information for use with his or her individual and group projects.
